Josetta Saffirio, Monforte (Barolo)

Josetta Saffirio, Monforte (Barolo)

Josetta Saffirio was a pioneer. Back in 1973, at the young age of 23, she transformed the family business that was selling grapes to other winemakers at the time, to a fully functional winery with her name and the famous gnomes as her emblem.

Today the winery is led by Josetta’s daughter Sara and Sara's father Roberto Vezza, who has been working as a winemaker all his life.

Sara is a woman with great passion, commitment and personality and undoubtedly one of the most prominent female producers in the Langhe today. Sara started her wine journey at the age of 19 when, with the support of her family, she decided to take the lead at the winery and focus entirely on producing excellent wine and to elevate the reputation of Monforte to new heights.

The estate stretches over 11.5 hectares in the area of Castelletto (Monforte d’Alba) with parcels in Castelletto and Ravera, and in particular:

  • Castelletto (Monforte d’Alba)

Persiera: 23 year-old vineyard at 400 asl with south east exposure that sits on a soil with a balanced combination of clay, silt and sand. The grapes from this vineyard are used for the production of the Barolo Persiera cru;

70 year-old vines, prime parcel with southern exposure from which the family produces their mighty Millenovecento48 Riserva; and

A mix of vineyards between 25 and 15 years old at 350/300m asl from which they produce their Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba.

    • Ravera(Monforte d’Alba):
    22 year-old vines at 320m asl with south east exposure, steep slopes and clay/limestone soils.

    The winery is 100% organic and follows biodynamic practices in both the vineyards and cellar mixing traditional methods with modern techniques.
    In the cellar, the main focus is maintaining the quality of the wine throughout the entire vinification lifecycle. After picking, which is carried out strictly by hand, the grapes arrive in the cellar almost immediately and a further selection is undertaken. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled (30-32°) stainless steel tanks for 7/10 days depending on the wine and the season. All the reds age in large used Botti. After ageing all the Barolo wines spend a further resting period in cement tanks before bottling.

    The Barolo Ravera ages for 24 months in used large oak barrels and after a 6 month period in cement tanks it is transferred into special porcelain amphora vessels where it ages for a further 12 months before bottling. In recent years this wine has gained an impressive following from Nebbiolo lovers thanks to its combination of elegance, balance and finesse. The wine shows typical vibrant depth of spicy and earthy aromas on the nose, great freshness and complexity in the mouth with round and well-integrated tannins.

    The family also produces a popular 100% Nebbiolo Langhe Doc Rosato and an exceptional rose sparkling wine  Metodo Classico made once again entirely from Nebbiolo grapes.
