Barbaresco Wine - Guido Rivella (Barbaresco Wine)

Barbaresco Wine - Guido Rivella (Barbaresco Wine)

Barbaresco Wine. After 44 glorious years as oenologist at Gaja, Guido retired in 2014. Since then he has been making tiny quantities of wine with his children Enrico and Silvia at his small family estate in Barbaresco.

Coming from a rural family (his grandparents and parents have always worked as farmers in the area), Guido was born in Barbaresco just down the street from where the cantina sits today, at the entrance of the Montestefano Borgata, in Barbaresco Wine.

After graduating at the prestigious Oenological School of Alba, Guido worked for a brief period outside the Langhe and then returned to Barbaresco to start his lifetime collaboration with the Gaja family.

Over the last few years, Guido Rivella and his children Enrico and Silvia, have restructured and combined three separate small family buildings. The complex includes a small bed and breakfast and a spotless cantina.

Today the cantina produces, in just under four hectares of vineyards, approximative 18,000 bottles. In the best vintages, Guido make four Barbaresco, a straight Barbaresco which is made from vineyards in Montestefano’s Sub-area Patricone and Bibinet and three single Barbaresco crus - the Fausoni, the Marcorino and the Montestefano. The wines are vinified in small temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and aged in used mixed size French oak. Bottling takes place after a period of rest in stainless steel vats.

Guido’s wines sell out on release.

Nobody knew the vineyards better than him”
Gaja and Rossana Gaja, talking about Guido Rivella in an interview with Margaret Rand in October 2017

For thirty-plus years, Gaja and Rivella formed a formidable duo”
Antonio Galloni
