Zambolin, Cossato (Alto Piemonte)

Zambolin, Cossato (Alto Piemonte)

It doesn't get anymore 'garagiste' than this; self-declared “Artigiano del Vino” Fabio Zambolin is one of the most exciting new faces in Alto Piemonte whose modest winemaking side-hustle is an endeavour in pursuing one's passion and honouring one's family. Hardly a land baron, Fabio owns less than one hectare of vines in Lessona that were left to him by his grandfather in 2010.

Fabio has fashioned a cantina in a tiny space barely larger in size than a mausoleum and makes just two wines with annual production of around 2,000 bottles. Though Fabio's vineyard lies within the Lessona Docg, his cantina sits 10 metres outside the zone, just enough that the governing law prohibits him to label his wine as such.

Both wines are labelled under the wider Coste Della Sesia Doc and present huge value for insiders who understand the lure of Lessona and want to save a few shillings whilst stocking their cellars. Fabio makes electric wines that are vibrant, meaty and packed with delicate nuances and the earthy blitheness found in the sandy soils of Lessona.

Fabio follows organic practices in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar to make true terroir-driven wines and is fast developing a cult following across the globe.
