Sopravvento, Carema (Alto Piemonte)

Sopravvento, Carema (Alto Piemonte)

Born from the intuition and passion of Michele and Matteo Melfa, Sopravvento is a new reality in Carema founded in 2019. Brothers Michele and Matteo, both professional sommeliers have two different stories, but also similar at the same time. After working for many years as a sommelier for a famous Michelin star restaurant in Piedmont, Michele decided to follow his passion for wine and devote himself 100% to the Sopravvento project following all the work in the vineyard and in the cellar.

Matteo, convinced by Michele's great passion for wine, a few years ago decided to leave the Faculty of Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Turin and leave for London, to learn about a key market in the international wine scene. To date, Matteo boasts an important experience accumulated in some of the finest Michelin star restaurants on the London scene, including "Petrus" by Gordon Ramsay and "Hide" by Ollie Dabbous, the latter well known for owning the largest restaurant wine list in Europe. In the near future Matteo plans to return to the cellar to help his brother and take care of the commercial side of the Sopravvento.

"The education of our palate is the key to the creation of wines with personality, wines that represent us", say the Melfa brothers "Since 2019 we create, as nègociant, "Changes!", the wine of change!’’

The family has recently purchased one hectare of vineyard in the viticultural holy grail of Carema, bringing back to life land previously abandoned for several years, replanting around 700 vines. Sopravvento will produce their first Carema Nebbiolo from the 2022 vintage. The operations in the vineyard and in the cellar are carried out taking into account the phases of the moon, which dictate the viticultural and vinification cycles at Sopravvento. The musts and the resulting wines are not manipulated showing the purest expression of the vineyard and the vintage. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, natural decantation, no filtration or clarification.

A microscopic production of 1000 bottles of Erbaluce ‘Changes’ is produced here every vintage and is already allocation only and highly coveted. We are proud to be representing the Melfa brothers and we can’t wait to see what the exciting future holds for the small yet perfectly formed Sopravvento.
