Alberto Burzi, La Morra (Barolo)

Alberto Burzi, La Morra (Barolo)

Part of the new generation of winemakers that are emerging in the Langhe, Alberto Burzi is one of the most ambitious and promising on the scene, making wines with great balance and personality. Alberto comes from a family of winegrowers. His grandfather Luigi was one of the original founders of Terre del Barolo, a local cooperative that was selling grapes to winemakers.

Alberto graduated in Viticulture and Enology in 2010 at the University of Turin. After working for a couple of years as a consultant for local wineries, Alberto took the helm at his family vineyards in La Morra and started to make wines under his own label. Alberto Burzi owns 7 hectares of vineyards entirely within La Morra. Rocchettevino, Rive, a 60-year-old parcel in “Roncaglie” used for the Langhe Nebbiolo and some vineyards in La Serra, just across from Brunate, whose grapes will be used in the future to produce a single vineyard Barolo. The family also owns an impressive 90-year-old parcel in the famed Capalot cru, which was planted by Alberto’s grandfather and previously leased to Roberto Voerzio, from which Alberto produces his signature single-cru Barolo Capalot.

Alberto’s dedication to the vines knows no bounds. Organic viticulture, hand pruning, careful guyot vine training system and manual harvest are only some of Alberto’s strict vineyard management practises. In the cellar, Alberto makes only 20,000 bottles per annum following the most traditional method of Barolo vinification with extended macerations and ageing in large used Austrian cask.

Burzi’s wines are characterised by a combination of finesse and elegance, concentration and complexity, uplifting acidity and fine tannins. A unique and signature style that makes Alberto’s range one of the most compelling of the entire Langhe. Already picking up a fiercely loyal collector following, star cantina status is just around the corner.
