Guido Rivella

SILVI0118

Barbaresco 2018

After 47 years as the legendary winemaker behind Gaja, Guido Rivella returned to his family roots in Barbaresco to produce something truly rare.
Working alongside his children, Silvia and Enrico, Guido crafts tiny quantities from his ancestral lands in the Montestefano cru.
In the Bottle you can expect a masterclass in balance. These are wines of "perfection" where the work is done in the soil, not the cellar. Whether it’s his silky Barbera or his majestic Barbaresco, every pour delivers deep elegance, vibrant acidity, and the soulful precision that only five decades of expertise can produce.

  • Grapes: 100% Nebbiolo
Viticulture:Grapes are sourced from 40–60-year-old vines in the Sori Montestefano, Patricone, and Bibinet vineyards (approx.0.8 hectares). The soil is deep, clayish, and calcareous. A strict "green harvest" is performed in August, removing up to 33% of the bunches to ensure concentrated, perfectly ripe fruit.
Vinification: Fermentation and maceration occur in small 5–10 HL stainless steel vats for 22–26 days at controlled temperatures (28–30°C) using a "submerged-cap" method to gently coax out noble tannins.
Ageing: 14–18 months in used wood of various sizes (barriques, tonneaux, and small barrels), some of which were originally sourced from the Gaja cellars. This is followed by several months of refinement in the bottle before release.
Bottles produced: Part of a total estate production of only 18,000 bottles (approx. 4,000–6,000 for this specific label).
    Alcohol: 14.5% abv

  • Colour: Brilliant garnet red with ruby reflections.
Nose: An elegant and complex bouquet featuring classic notes of violet and rosehip, layered with sweet tobacco, liquorice, and a hint of dark chocolate and spice (nutmeg and pepper).
Palate: Decisive and compact. It displays a masterful balance between firm, silky tannins and fresh acidity. Expect a long, persistent finish with savory undertones and a sophisticated, "feminine" elegance.

  • After 44 years as the main winemaker for Gaja, back in 2014 Guido set up his own winery at his small family estate in Montestefano. In just under four hectares of vineyards, the cantina produces 15,000 bottles, most of which sell out on release. Gaja quality at a fraction of the price = solid gold
