Bricco Ernesto, located in the picturesque municipality of Priocca, boasts a rich winemaking heritage that spans four generations, primarily focused on the classic Nebbiolo grape. Renato Vezza, the current custodian of the vineyards, honed his skills as a sommelier in bustling places like London, Canada, and Australia, before returning to Priocca to lead the family vineyard.
Though small, at just 0.6 hectares, with only 0.3 hectares currently in production and another 0.3 hectares planted in 2019, the vineyard's altitude sets it apart, perched at an impressive 280 meters as one of the highest locations in Roero. The north-facing Arneis vines thrive in a unique soil composition of 70% sand, 20% limestone, and 10% clay, encouraging deep root growth in search of moisture.
Committed to sustainable practices, the vineyard employs a meticulous winemaking process: grapes are de-stemmed and undergo a brief four-day maceration on the skins before fermentation, which utilizes indigenous yeast in a blend of amphora (50%) and large barrels (50%). The results are nothing short of spectacular!
The tiny quantity produced by Renato every year always sells out before release and it is an absolute coup for Ultravino to be representing this cantina in the UK.
