Ficomontanino is a unique winery located in Chiusi, in southern Tuscany, near the borders of Lazio and Umbria. From the highest point of the estate, visitors can observe the distinct profiles of these three regions, where diverse flora, air, and sunlight blend together. Tuscany brings strength, Umbria offers the purity of water, and Lazio adds a sense of depth—elements that inspire the winemaking philosophy at Ficomontanino.
The estate is steeped in history, having once been an island in the Chiana Valley when it was a prehistoric sea. Over the centuries, it has been shaped by the cultural influences of the Etruscans and Romans, as well as the traditions of the Tuscan grand duchy and the Papal state during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. This rich heritage has informed local agricultural practices, creating a melting pot of rural gestures rediscovered thanks to local farmers.
The story of Ficomontanino began when Maria Sole's grandfather impulsively acquired the property in the 1960s. Initially a retreat where he produced olive oil and bred horses, he soon recognized the land's potential for viticulture. Discovering ancient rootstocks in deep terraces, he embarked on a journey as a winegrower, eventually planting 11 hectares of vines. Maria Sole's father, Alessandro, continued this legacy with a deep commitment to natural farming methods.
Maria Sole, having studied at Pollenzo, the University of Culinary Arts associated with Slow Food, returned to the estate to infuse the wines with a meaningful message through traditional agricultural practices. Inspired by the philosophies of Fukuoka and Steiner, she developed a system where vines coexist harmoniously with natural flora, alongside other crops and animals, creating a sustainable and vibrant ecosystem.
